Inclusion in persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) – AUNEX

s a result of the 1st cooperation agreement between Fundación para la Promoción del Deporte Ecuestre and Asociación Autismo Norte de Extremadura (AUNEX), from Plasencia, it has been possible to conduct a program to foster social inclusion in persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), by the means of horses.

The project aimed to facilitate social inclusion of persons with ASD through activities with horses, like individual and group therapeutic riding sessions, and family gatherings, held from January to July, 2018.

  • 5 children and youths, aged 5 to 25, with and without diversity issues, received individual sessions every week for an hour.
  • Group sessions, held every other week for two hours, encouraged 11 participants with a diagnose and profile of ASD and an age range of 7 to 20, to build groups with their peers of about their agethrough leisure and adapted sports activities with horses.
  • The purpose of the full day family gathering was that 22 families of children with ASD could participate in activities with them, forat least 4 hours.

Considering how motivating people with ASD find horse riding and the contact with horses, Fundación para la Promoción del Deporte Ecuestrehas wanted to start a collaboration with the AUNEX program to continue promoting Equestrian Therapies as a tool to help an increasing number of people.
