Assessment of ulcers prevention and treatment – Horse 1
Following a cooperation line established in the previous years, Fundación para la Promoción del Deporte Ecuestre and the well known horse nutrition company Horse 1, established a cooperation agreement to conduct during years 2015 and 2016 a research study to assess the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers on horses.
Research began in September 2015, on a total of 130 horses in Jumping, Classic Dressage, Horseball, Races, and Eventing disciplines. The first step was to conduct endoscopies on the horses to detect gastric ulcers, and select the horses to be included in the study sample. 32 of the horses went on a special fodder diet, to assess if it improved recovery, while the other 32 kept on their usual diet.
Other positive aspects of this research are: free-treatment for horses with gastric ulcers grades 3 and 4; analysis of 45 different food samples to achieve a deeper understanding on pH and the contribution of soluble carbohydrates, being able to evaluate correctly the changes in the horse’s stomach environment.
Analysis of results began in January 2016, in order to meet the deadline for the “European Workshop for Equine Nutrition”, to be held in France in June 2016.
Through this study, Fundación para la Promoción del Deporte Ecuestre wants to support research on the nutritional health factors involved in the development, prevention and treatment of ulcerous pathologies.
